The Uncleared Margin Rules (UMR) Business Risk Analyst position is part of the Transaction and Processing Risk (TPR) group and its expanding team to control and monitor initial margin regulatory requirements.

TPR is a new function responsible for providing Markets-wide leadership in proactively developing and implementing frameworks to assess, control & monitor common transaction and processing risk activities to ensure they operate within risk appetite. The UMR Risk team will be responsible for BAU control execution including the establishment and maintenance of a robust 1st Line of Defense control environment and culture to minimize operational risk within the business.


Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities and priorities will evolve over time; however, the following are some of the specific activities expected of this role:

  • The primary responsibility will be coordination, including monitoring of regulatory initial margin, a focus on related deliverables for Uncleared Margin Rules (UMR) Phase 6 and beyond and reporting across multiple Front Office, Legal and Operations teams.
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of initial and variation margin and initial margin rules & regulations, concepts and operation processing - ability to apply a comprehensive understanding of concepts and procedures and apply to collateral and margin processing.
  • “Hands on” ownership of global end-to-end BAU process for Uncleared Margin working with business and cross functional areas to ensure regulatory initial and variation margin is risk managed and processed effectively.
  • Proactively escalate and facilitate business management of margin exposure that is approaching risk limits including expediting remediation of breaches of the margin threshold if required.
  • Provide support in various components of UMR workstreams for Markets and participate in risk and governance meetings relevant to Uncleared Margin Rules ensuring front-to-back connectivity across all asset classes.
  • Support a culture of ownership and set “tone from the top” for complying with all applicable regulations, policies and encouraging a culture of continuous process improvement.
  • Design and implement business and quality assurance processes, including the design of intelligent metrics, and implementation of effective governance processes.
  • Proactive interaction with Legal, Compliance, Sales, Markets Transformation and other relevant SMEs to transition processes such as initial margin monitoring to BAU, and to establish robust processes for incorporation of new clients into the initial margin process based on AANA (Average Aggregated Notional Amount) levels moving forward.
  • Work with, coach and develop on and offshore team members.
  • Understand regulatory rulesets in detail and their applicability to Citi's in-scope entities and clients.
  • Effective communication with key stakeholders.
  • Liaison and clear communication with external parties, including clients and regulators where required.
  • Identify significant processing risk control weaknesses & gaps, develop solutions and lead initiatives to remediate working closely with the transformation team and other elements of the TPR group as necessary.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of global markets trading products (Fixed Income, Equity, Derivatives, Currencies & Commodities).
  • Understanding of Front Office trading processes across the full trade lifecycle within a large bank/dealer.
  • Working knowledge of Uncleared Margin regulatory requirements and strong familiarity with Dodd Frank & EMIR regulations: CFTC/US Prudential Regulators/SEC and EU/UK margin rules preferred.
  • Experience interfacing with global custodians and understanding the difference between third party and tri-party custodial relationships as well as knowledge in collateral management and initial margin posting.
  • Experience with Acadia Initial Margin Threshold Monitor a plus. Acadia is a collateral and initial margins management system/ software used to monitor counterparty utilization.
  • Experience in initial margin grid, SIMM (Standard Initial Margin Model) and AANA (Average Aggregated Notional Amount) calculations.
  • Ability to work across support functions and in consultation with business control specialists in other regions and products is essential.
  • Relevant experience in financial services Operational Risk Management or related discipline.
  • Prior experience in Audit, Compliance or Legal would be beneficial.
  • Ability to interact successfully with multicultural/virtual teams.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing and organizational skills to mobilize and motivate delivery in a co-operative and collaborative working environment across trading and support/infrastructure/control functions.
  • Experience of designing and implementing structured business/operational processes and business requirements documentation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to seamlessly communicate complex technical issues to non-technical colleagues.
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and SharePoint skills.

Education/ Qualifications:

  • College/university degree education preferred
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience
  • Outstanding leadership, communications, and influencing skills as the role will work with senior leaders, and audit partners on a regular basis. Relevant experience in financial services a must.
  • With project management and governance experience and demonstrated ability to achieve and exceed critical milestones.
  • Must have ability to foster working relationships with other leaders across multiple lines of businesses and with support organizations including auditors and regulators.
  • Demonstrated judgement and critical thinking skills.
